Thought Leader of the Week: Barbara Koster

Photo: Barbara KosterOn Veterans Day we salute the men and women who have served in the U.S. military. "Not only on Veterans Day but throughout the year, they deserve our deep appreciation for keeping America safe here and abroad," says Barbara Koster, chief information officer for Prudential.

But appreciation is just the start, notes Koster, who has oversight responsibility for Prudential's Office of Veterans Initiatives. Prudential recognizes the value active reservists, transitioning veterans and military spouses bring to the workplace and is dedicated to helping them build sustainable careers. Prudential's VETalent program with Workforce Opportunities Services, a non-profit organization that collaborates with colleges and universities to train former members of the military in the skills needed to begin a civilian career, helps veterans transition into the workplace.

As a result, Koster sees firsthand the positive impact Corporate America can have on those returning from service. That's why she encourages other companies to help ensure returning veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment in the private sector.

"Not only do we attract top talent, but we help those who have selflessly served our nation," Koster says. "For us, hiring veterans is a crucial element of our talent acquisition strategy."
